Track and field championships at UM to feature high school stars

The Bangor area will field some top high school athletes when the state Classes A, B and C track and field championships are held Saturday at the University of Maine in Orono.

Athletes from Bangor, Brewer, John Bapst of Bangor, Hermon, Hampden Academy, Old Town, Bangor Christian, Orono and Central of Corinth will vie for individual and team titles against the state’s best.

The meets begin at 10 a.m.

Class A

Bangor’s Emily Capehart and Brewer’s Heather Clark are two local athletes who have good shots at individual state championships in Orono.

Capehart scored 34 points in her four events at the Eastern Maine Class A Championship meet, winning the long jump, triple jump and 300 hurdles, and finishing fourth in the 200.

Capehart, who will attend Brown University in the fall, has won three individual state titles and two relay titles in her career. She has finished second in the state on four other occasions.

Clark is one of the state’s top distance runners, though she struggled a bit last weekend in Bath. Clark finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 800, but is a bona fide threat to win either – or both – at the state meet.

Class B

Hermon’s Chantelle Haggerty and Hampden Academy’s Oriana Farley are two of the top medal favorites going into Saturday’s Class B state championship meet.

Haggerty, who pole-vaulted to a height of 11 feet during the winter (indoor) season, smashed the spring state record by 6 inches with a vault of 10 feet, 9 inches. She’s also a top contender in both the 100- and 400-meter dashes.

Farley, who won the 800-meter run last week going away and was second in the 1,600, will be rested and ready this week after attending the senior prom this past weekend the night before the Eastern regional championship meet.

“Actually, I’ve been trying to come up with a good strategy for me in the mile and I just haven’t figured it out yet. I know it’s sad because I’ve been doing it for so long, but it still confuses me how to run the mile,” Farley said. ” I think I was a little too conservative and it got to the point where my legs were really heavy and I didn’t have much the last lap.”

Local athletes who will compete in the Class B state championships:

Class C

There’s no question the John Bapst of Bangor boys are eager for the Class C state track and field championships. The Crusaders came close to earning runner-up honors and even tying eventual winner Winthrop, but came in third.

“I’m really excited for states this year,” said John Bapst senior Ian Connole, who qualified for states in the 110-meter hurdles and should also run on Bapst’s relay teams. “Last year … we had a few slippages [in seeds] and Winthrop stepped up and got points in some events where we didn’t have anyone, and we slipped down to third. Western Maine was a bit stronger last year. This year I think eastern Maine can hold their own.”

The John Bapst girls will also try to win a state championship Saturday. The Crusaders won their Eastern Maine Class C title meet last Saturday. Bapst is sending 13 qualifiers to the state meet, including Logan Rich, who has a shot to score in four events.
