Maine strikes out on television

Fans hoping to catch the University of Maine’s NCAA regional baseball game on television are out of luck.

Black Bear baseball enthusiasts will be able to listen to live action on Bangor all-sports radio station WZON (620 AM) as UMaine takes on California State Northridge Friday at 10 p.m.

Officials at Bangor TV station WABI (Channel 5) looked into broadcasting the regional tournament first round game, but opted not to because neither the NCAA nor any TV stations in the Los Angeles area are broadcasting any of the tourney games.

“Without local production, it’s an impossibility for us,” said WABI program director Steve Hiltz. “And the timing was bad, too, because with us doing the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon Saturday [9 a.m. to 8 p.m.], we could have only done Friday’s game.”

Hiltz also pointed to the immense cost of producing and broadcasting a game from the opposite coast as another big reason WABI had to pass on the broadcast.

“We’ll just have to wait for them to advance to the [national] championship game, which will be carried by CBS,” Hiltz said with a laugh. “No, we would have liked to have done it, but with the NCAA not producing any games, it’s just too expensive a proposition.”

WZON is airing the game, but usual Black Bear baseball voice Jim Churchill will not be doing play-by-play as the Sports Zone is using a California-based crew.
