AUBURN – All that will remain of a 125-year-old department store chain that once operated in the Northeast will be two stores after the Porteous store closes at the Auburn Mall.
The Auburn store will begin liquidating merchandise in mid-June and the building will be vacated by the end of July, said Bob Mills, store manager.
Porteous is one of two department stores anchoring the Auburn Mall. The other is JC Penney. The mall itself is for sale.
The closure will leave Porteous stores in Bangor and Presque Isle as the last legacy of the Porteous chain.
The Dunlap Co., based in Fort Worth, Texas, bought the Porteous stores about a dozen years ago, Mills said.
