Sumner High School
EAST SULLIVAN – Principal Sally A. Leighton has announced honor parts for the Sumner High School Class of 2002. Commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13.
Rachel Philio, daughter of David and Amy Philio of Gouldsboro, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. She plans to attend Bates College in Lewiston.
Philio is the secretary of the National Honor Society and is vice president of her class and of student council. She has been active in soccer, basketball, softball, Environmental Concerns Club, band, Cabaret and math team. She is the recipient of a Maine Scholars Achievement Award, a Society of Women Engineers Award, a Heismann Award nominee, a National Student Leadership Conference nominee, and a member of the PVC All-Academic Team in basketball.
Grey Burkart, son of Joseph and Donna Burkart of Franklin, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2002. He plans to attend Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, to study international relations.
He is the treasurer of the National Honor Society. He has served as the technical director for drama, has participated in band, jazz band, Cabaret, French Club, and worked on the prom and yearbook committees. He was the recipient of the 2002 Principal’s Leadership Award, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, the Maine Scholars Achievement Award, and the Presidential Distinguished Award.
First honor essayist is Emily Duncan, daughter of Nancy Glista of Franklin and James Duncan of Woolwich. She plans to attend Fordham University and major in sociology.
She has been active in drama, French Club, International Club, yearbook and prom committee.
Second honor essayist is Jessica Boyd, daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Boyd of Gouldsboro. She plans to attend New England College in Henniker, N.H.
She has been active in student council, executive student council, prom committee, yearbook, basketball and track.
