Teen-ager injured in fall from Mount Battie trail

CAMDEN – A teen-ager climbing Mount Battie fell about 30 feet Tuesday afternoon and had to be carried from the trail and flown by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Details were few because of the law governing the release of medical information on a minor, but public safety officials said the victim is believed to be a 17-year-old boy.

A crew from the Camden First-Aid Association carried the victim from the Mount Battie trail, which leads to the mountain top from Harden Avenue, to a waiting ambulance at about 4 p.m.

The ambulance took the victim to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, where the helicopter was waiting. No information on the victim’s condition was available.

Cliffs on the west side of the mountain are often used by rock climbers. Some of the marked hiking trails also are considered dangerous. The Maiden Cliff trail, local legend has it, was named for a young girl who fell to her death there.
