Mapleton driver hits pickup truck broadside

PRESQUE ISLE – A Presque Isle man escaped serious injury Tuesday morning when his small pickup truck was hit broadside by a car and rolled over.

James Maillett, 77, suffered abrasions to the back of his head, according to Officer Dwight Wilcox of the Presque Isle Police Department. He was taken by Crown Ambulance to the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, was treated and released. The driver of the car, Karen St. Peter, 45, of Mapleton, was not injured.

Both Maillett and St. Peter were wearing seat belts, Wilcox said.

Maillett was trapped briefly in his truck after the crash. The Presque Isle Fire Department assisted him from his vehicle.

According to Wilcox, Maillett was traveling west on State Street and started to make a left-hand turn into Rick’s Redemption Center at 98 State St. when his 1991 Ford Ranger pickup truck was hit on the passenger side by St. Peter’s eastbound 1998 Oldsmobile.

St. Peter had just turned onto State Street from Parsons Street when the accident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. The force of the impact of the car caused the pickup truck to roll onto its roof.

The truck was demolished, according to Wilcox. St. Peter’s car had damage estimated at $3,800.
