Big School (Classes A-B)
Bryan Brown
Bangor’s freshman singles tennis player helped lead the Rams to their first-ever state team title with a comeback 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Deering’s Pat Conway, the reigning state singles champion who beat Brown in straight sets three weeks earlier. Brown also won the deciding match in the East Class A regional final with a straight-set win over Lewiston’s Chris Willer two days earlier.
Small School (Classes C-D)
Jason Thompson
Washburn’s freshman lefthander pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 batters in a playoff baseball game. In 11 games, he has compiled a 7-2 record while notching 88 strikeouts and allowing 14 earned runs, 24 hits, and 31 walks in 47 innings.
Girls
Big School (Classes A-B)
Kelly White
The Bucksport senior pitcher has given up just two runs and four hits while striking out 29 and walking five in three playoff games. The Golden Bucks have outscored their opponents 29-2 in that stretch.
Small School (Classes C-D)
Maranda Butler
Butler, a Fort Fairfield junior, drove in the game-winning run and added two more RBIs in a Class D regional crossover game against Jonesport-Beals, lifting the Tigers into the Eastern Maine Class D championship game. She also homered in a Northeastern region semifinal win over Ashland.
