4-vehicle crash in Orland leaves 1 dead, 4 hurt

ORLAND – A Castine man was killed and four other people were injured Friday afternoon in a multiple-car accident on Route 1 in Orland.

Around 2:30 p.m., Edgar Bowden, 64, was traveling west on Route 1 in his Honda Accord when he veered into the oncoming lane and struck a Dodge van driven by Hazel Ferland of Gardiner. The impact forced the van to roll over onto its side.

According to the report from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Bowden continued in the oncoming lane and struck a Honda Civic driven by Kristion Lamoreau of Orland in a “nearly head-on” collision. Bowden then drifted back into the westbound lane and was struck by a Toyota pickup driven by Catherine Hoeing of Surry.

Bowden was pronounced dead at the scene. Hazel Ferland and her passenger, Henry Ferland, were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with complaints of chest pain. Lamoreau was taken to EMMC for cuts on her leg and an injury to her wrist. All three were treated and then released. Hoeing suffered no injuries, according to the report.

Correction: A story and headline in some editions of Saturday’s Maine Day incorrectly identified the number of people hurt in a four-car accident in Orland. Five people were involved in the accident. One person was killed, and three were injured. One person was uninjured.
