High school state games rescheduled

Saturday’s day-long rain wiped out the entire high school state championship baseball and softball games schedule, so the Maine Principals’ Association will try to do it all again on Monday.

The schedule is not only delayed, it is now also jumbled as game times have switched to 3 and 7 p.m. at all sites. Saturday’s games were to start at noon and 5 p.m.

Baseball action will take place at both Mansfield Stadium in Bangor and St. Joseph’s College in Standish, while softball games will be hosted at Coffin Field in Brewer and St. Joseph’s. Classes A and C games will be at Standish with B and D at Bangor and Brewer.

This is the first time since 1998 that weather has forced postponements of the state championship games.

The early baseball games will have Maranacook of Readfield making its third straight appearance in the Class B game against Foxcroft Academy in Bangor at 3 p.m. with Sanford meeting Oxford Hills of South Paris in Standish at 3 p.m. in the Class A game. Maranacook will try to win its second title in three years.

Night games will match up North Yarmouth Academy – making its third state-game appearance in four years with a 1-1 record – and Lee Academy at 7 p .m. in Bangor for the Class D title while Jay takes on George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill at the same time in Standish for the C crown.

In softball, early games involve Buckfield vs. Lee Academy in Class D at Brewer and St. Dominic of Lewiston against Narraguagus of Harrington in Class C at Standish. The night games bring together Greely of Cumberland Center and Erskine Academy of South China in Class B at Brewer and Biddeford against Leavitt of Turner in the A game at Standish. Erskine is back a third straight time after winning in 2000 and losing last year.
