An attempted home invasion in Brewer was thwarted just before midnight Sunday when a woman investigated a suspicious noise at the front door of her North Main Street apartment and found someone trying to break in, police said.

The woman initially thought the noise was caused by animals in front of her house, but found that someone had broken in her front door and was reaching through the opening to unlatch her chain lock, Brewer police Sgt. Chris Martin said. Police were unable to locate the individual who tried to enter the 347 North Main St. apartment, but do have leads they are investigating.

The drivers of two vehicles that crashed on the Hogan Road in Bangor Monday afternoon were not seriously injured despite damage to their vehicles that totaled about $7,000, officials said.

Lola Abbott, 73, of Bar Harbor was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor and was treated and released after complaining of neck pain and suffering minor facial burns from the deployment of her car’s air bag, Bangor police Officer Jason McCambley said. Robert Corey, 58, of Riverview, Fla., was treated at the scene of the accident after complaining of ankle pain.

Abbott had been pulling out of the Quirk Auto Park parking lot and onto the Hogan Road after a vehicle in the right northbound lane stopped to allow her to enter traffic, McCambley said. Corey had been traveling in the left northbound lane and did not know that Abbott was pulling into traffic.

Abbott and Corey didn’t see each other coming, the officer said. Damage to the Abbott vehicle’s left front corner was estimated at $5,000 while damage to Corey’s vehicle’s front end was estimated at $2,000.

A Bangor man was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants in Brewer Monday morning after driving up and down side streets throughout the city but claiming he was headed to work in Old Town, police said.

Brewer police Sgt. Chris Martin and Officer Rich Smith had noticed a 1988 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 38-year-old Stephen Crews driving suspiciously up dead-end and side streets at 1 a.m. and pulled the car over, Smith said. Crews told the officers he had come to Brewer to check on a friend and was heading to work in Old Town.

After failing field sobriety tests, Crews was given a breathalyzer test which found his blood alcohol level to be 0.26 percent, more than three times the legal limit for adults in Maine of 0.08 percent, Smith said. Crews was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and later was released on his personal recognizance.
