ROCHESTER, N.H. – A Maine man died when his car was hit by a driver trying to flee city police, authorities said.

Michael Morneault, 40, of Berwick, Maine, died in the crash Monday evening.

Edward Byron, 29, of Milton has been charged with negligent homicide, drunken driving, disobeying a police officer and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Byron was being treated for injuries suffered in the collision, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m.

Police said an officer responded to a report of a drunken driver and pulled Byron over on Salmon Falls Road. When the officer got out of his cruiser to approach Byron’s car, Byron drove off, crossing the road’s centerline to pass other cars.

As the officer got back into his cruiser to follow him, he saw Byron speed into the intersection at Route 125 and crash into three other cars, said Police Chief David Dubois.

Other people suffered injuries as well, but police had not released their names Tuesday.

Dubois said the department would conduct an internal investigation, but it appeared the officer had been following department policy in his pursuit of Byron’s car. Dubois did not name the officer.
