Bangor

For children ages 12 to 16, the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department is offering an opportunity to participate in the outdoors.

Titled the “Youth Outdoor Adventure Program,” the series of summer events gives Bangor boys and girls time to engage in activities such as hiking, whitewater rafting and whale watching.

The group size can range from six to 12 people.

Dates and registration deadlines are listed below:

. Monday, July 1, hiking at Gulf Hagus, which is near Brownville Junction and part of the Appalachian Trail. The deadline is June 24. The cost is $15.

. Monday, July 8, whale watching in Bar Harbor. The deadline is June 28. The cost is $30.

. Monday, July 15, hiking at Boarstone Mountain, near Monson and Willimantic. The deadline is July 8. The cost is $5.

. Monday, July 22, hiking at the Sugarloaf area. The deadline is June 27. The cost is $15.

. Monday, July 29, whitewater rafting. The deadline is June 28. The cost is $65.

. Monday, Aug. 5, hiking at Mount Katahdin. The deadline is July 29. The cost is $15.

Volunteers from WBRC Architects and Engineers are providing guided architectural tours of historic downtown Bangor at noon Thursdays this summer. A $5 donation to benefit the Bangor Museum and Center for History is suggested.

Tours begin at the Bangor Convention and Visitors Center at 115 Main St. For ticket information, call 942-5766.

Company president Jim Wellehan announced that Lamey-Wellehan will open its sixth shoe store and first New Balance store at the Mid Mall this summer in the former Strawberries location and adjacent store.

Wellehan’s father, Daniel J. Wellehan founded Lamey-Wellehan in Lewiston in 1914.

In 1990 the Maine Merchant’s Association honored Lamey-Wellehan as retailer of the year and as retailer of the decade in 2000.

Peter Lacy will be the store manager.

Manna Ministries needs help. In the first quarter of this year, 36,000 families and individuals in Penobscot County received food from soup kitchens or food pantries. Manna supplies 23 percent of that food.

Manna is in need of boxed macaroni and cheese, baked beans, all pasta except lasagna, canned soups of all kinds and 8-inch Styrofoam plates. Items may be dropped off 8 a.m-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at 180 Center St.

New England Financial, a financial services company based in Boston, has opened a district office.

Gene Gagne served as the host at an open house June 13 at Key Plaza, 23 Water St.

New England Financial Services provides insurance and investment products for individuals and businesses.

Hampden

The Hampden Historical Society has elected new officers: president, Jerry Stanhope; vice president, Lew Gilman; secretary, Nadine Hoyt; treasurer, Joan Recker; assistant treasurer, Vivian Gresser; corresponding secretary, Roberta Barteaux; new member of the board, Norma Gilman.

Upcoming activities will include: July 13, Antiques Appraisal Fair; June 24, program on history and welfare of veterinary medicine by John Blaisdell; July 22, carpool to Heritage Gardens in Center Montville; Sept. 14, Heritage Days.

The Hampden Recreation Department has a new program. Teen Exploration Camp is for pupils entering grades six, seven or eight and combines the spirit of community service with summer activities.

Two weeklong sessions will be July 8-12 and July 15-19. Camp hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Each session is limited to 14 participants. The fee is $150 and includes transportation and trip costs. Registration forms are available at the Hamden Town Office. Registration deadline is July 29. for information, call 862-6451.

Old Town

Weldon Young, a customer service professional at Carquest Auto Parts, has received the designation Carquest Platinum Pro Plus by Carquest Auto Parts national headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. The Platinum Pro Plus designation recognizes the advanced customer service excellence and enhanced technical knowledge of Carquest parts specialists.

Orono

Fatima Munson has opened Fatima’s Baraka, a Moroccan take-out and catering business at 12 Spruce St. The menu features traditional food such as Moroccan stew served over couscous, chicken pie spiced with saffron and cinnamon, and a rich soup made of chick peas, tomatoes and lentils. The Maine Credit Union League honored 10 Maine Credit Unions recently at a ceremony.

Professionals from the Maine Public Relations Council judged the awards, which honor Credit Unions for community and-or member service efforts.

Honored among credit unions with assets of $100 million to $200 million were: University Credit Union in Orono, first place, and Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union in Brunswick, second place. Each was among the credit unions receiving the Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility.
