Festival offers Shakespeare, ‘Green Gables’

BANGOR – The Penobscot Theatre Company-Maine Shakespeare Festival has announced several productions for the July 16-Aug. 17 Maine Shakespeare Festival, most to be performed on the waterfront at Front Street.

Curtain time for the waterfront productions is 8 p.m.

“Richard III” by William Shakespeare will be shown in preview July 16. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on the waterfront July 19, 25, 28; Aug. 3, 9, 14. Free discussion will be held before the July 28 show.

“The Tempest,” also by Shakespeare, will be shown in preview July 17. Performances are scheduled for July 20, 26; Aug. 1, 4, 7, 11, 16. A free discussion at 5:30 p.m. will precede the Aug. 4 performance.

“The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged)” by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, will be in preview July 18. Performances are scheduled on the waterfront for July 21, July 24, 27, 31; Aug. 2, 8, 10, 15, 17.

“Anne of Green Gables” adapted by Alice Chadwicke from the L.M. Montgomery novel about a youngster on Prince Edward Island, will be performed at 2 p.m. at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St., downtown Bangor.

Previews are scheduled for July 6 and 7, with performances on July 12, 13, 14, 26, 27, 28.

For the waterfront shows, gates and vendor booths will be open at 7 p.m. Preshow activities at 7:30 p.m. may include madrigal singing, juggling and play orientation.

Prices for preview performances vary by day of performance and seating area, from $10 to $15 for adults; group rates are available for all shows. Previews for “Anne of Green Gables” are $8. Children’s tickets cost less. There also are discounts for seniors, educators, students, military personnel, and Bangor residents, and family packages available.

The season sponsor is WLBZ-TV, with additional support from the Bangor Daily News.

MSF Festival sponsors are the Phenix Inn, city of Bangor, Eastern Maine Technical College. The MSF Production Underwriter is Northeast Cardiology Associates. Show sponsors for “Anne of Green Gables” are Rose Marie and Ted Curtis.

While theatergoers are in Bangor, they may want to check out the current exhibit of the Bangor Museum and Center for History, formerly the Bangor Historical Society, at the Thomas Hill House at 159 Union St.

“Ruffians, Ruffles, Parasols and Patriots: The Story of Bangor’s History through Costume” will be on display through Dec. 20.

Museum hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The gift shop is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. House tours at 4 p.m. There are AAA and senior citizen discounts.

More events will be offered relating to the exhibit theme. Details will be announced in coming weeks.

The Bangor Museum and Center for History also is offering a variety of tours for $5 each. Best of Bangor Bus Tours will be held the second Saturday of each month, June through October. The bus will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the Chamber of Commerce parking lot on Main Street.
