ASHLAND – Honor parts for the Class of 2002 have been announced by the guidance department at Ashland Community High School. Commencement exercises were held June 7 at Bobby Goding Memorial Gymnasium.

Alan R. Hitchcock, son of Carrie Smith-Gagne of Portage, was named valedictorian for the Class of 2002. He will attend the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where he will study education.

Hitchcock participated in baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, Model State Legislature, student council, Future Farmers of America, was a D.A.R.E. role model, and attended Boys State. He also served as a peer tutor, a volunteer at the Ashland Recreational Center, was the recipient of the Maine Principals’ Association award and was president of National Honor Society.

Eric D. Ham, son of Traci Ham of Masardis and David Ham of Medway, was named salutatorian of the Class of 2002. He will attend the University of Maine to study new media.

Ham participated in baseball, basketball and soccer, Model State Legislature, band, and a musical production. He also served as president of the National Honor Society.

Randall Junkins, son of Michael and Randa Junkins of Masardis, was named first honor essayist for the Class of 2002. He will attend Le Moyne College in New York to study education.

Junkins participated in basketball and soccer, band, French Club, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation and served as a class officer. He has attended Model State Legislature, been a member of National Honor Society, participated in a musical production, and served as a lector at St. Mark’s Church.

Meghan Finlay, daughter of Barbara Finlay of Portage, was named second honor essayist. She will attend College of the Atlantic to study environmental sciences.

She has participated in the Aroostook Gifted and Talented Program, cross-country skiing, and taught Sunday school at the Ashland Union Congregational Church.
