Ramos garners honor Noble senior named Miss Maine Softball

AUGUSTA – Meagan Ramos had been looking forward all season to playing in the Maine High School Softball Coaches Association’s Senior All-Star game, but the Noble of Berwick second baseman arrived at Cony Park in street clothes instead. Ramos had injured her knee playing in an Amateur Softball Association tournament in Massachusetts Friday.

Disappointed, she sat in the dugout with her teammates from Western Maine schools. It didn’t help that the East beat the West 5-2.

What saved Ramos’ day? Winning Miss Maine Softball.

“I was really upset because this is something I’ve been working toward for four years,” she said. “It was kind of rough last night thinking that I wasn’t going to be able to play. I’m still a little bitter, but hey, getting this award makes up for it.”

Ramos’ name was announced in a ceremony in between the A/B and C/D games. She hobbled out to pick up her trophy, her right leg wrapped in a walking cast.

Players, pitchers and coaches of the year in all four classifications were also honored Saturday.

Eastern Maine honorees included Players of the Year Kim Lipman of Cony in Class A, Buckport’s Kelly White in Class B, Penquis of Milo’s Megan Russell in Class C and Deidra Ham of Lee in Class D.

The top Eastern Maine pitchers of the year were Oxford Hills of South Paris’ Jessie Dennis (Class A), Erskine of South China’s Katie Mainville (Class B), and Ashley Woodward of Narraguagus High in Harrington (Class C).

There was no pitcher honored in Eastern Maine Class D because none were nominated, Coaches Association president Mike Verrill said.

Ramos injured her knee Friday when she was trying to beat out a throw to first on a dropped third strike. Ramos isn’t sure of the extent of the injury, but it the knee is swollen.

Ramos, who said she had a .510 batting average this year, will attend St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. next year, where she hopes to play softball.
