Abbe Museum schedules archaeology field school

BAR HARBOR – Anyone interested in learning more about the archaeology of Maine is invited to participate in the Abbe Museum archaeology field school, scheduled Sept. 15-20 on an island near Mount Desert Island.

Participation in the field school is open to anyone age 17 and older, with no previous archaeological experience necessary. The number of people who can participate is limited and preregistration is required. Priority registration is a benefit of membership in the Abbe.

During the field school, participants will work alongside archaeologists to investigate a site that has been damaged both by vandalism and erosion. The site will be reached by a short boat ride.

Field school students also work in the Abbe Museum’s new research lab to analyze the artifacts found at the site. The field school will model the steps of the scientific archaeological process, including discussion, field excavation, lab analysis and interpretation.

The cost of the field school is $300 for Abbe members and $350 for nonmembers. The cost does not include lodging or meals; the Abbe will provide information on area lodging
