BREWER – Bangor American Legion righthander Billy Chapman had struck out the first two hitters in the third inning of Tuesday’s game against Brewer at Heddericg Field and then got a first-pitch strike on Adam Sheehan.
But the Falcons strung together six consecutive hits to produce four runs and lefty Chad Gomm made it stand up by scattering eight hits as the Falcons beat the Comrades 7-1.
Brewer first baseman Joel Barrett, who belted a three-run double off reliever Cole McElwain in the fourth inning, said the Falcons have been scoring two-out runs all season.
“Our lineup is stacked. It’s amazing,” said Barrett, who is 9-for-15 this season after a 2-for-4 night Tuesday.
Chapman concurred.
“They’ve got the best lineup in the zone, probably,” said Chapman, who added that he was hampered by a sore arm.
Adam Sheehan triggered the rally with a soft line-drive single down the right-field line and Jason Harvey followed with a two-run homer to center, his second of the season, to make it 2-1.
“He threw me a fastball on the outside part of the plate. I was looking for a fastball. I zoned it up pretty good,” said Harvey.
Chapman said it was a fastball “that didn’t have a lot of heat on it.”
Barrett grounded a single to left, stole second and scored on Abram Allard’s line-drive single to center.
Allard went to second on the throw, catching a break when first baseman Zev Myerowitz’s relay went to the third base side of the bag.
Kyle Dalton singled home Allard.
In the fourth, two walks and McElwain’s throwing error set the stage for Barrett’s long bases-clearing double to right center.
“It was an off-speed pitch. But it wasn’t a curve or anything like that. It was on the outside half of the plate and I had to go with it. I couldn’t try to pull that pitch,” said Barrett.
Gomm gave up hits to the first three hitters he faced, but got out of a first-and-third, nobody-out jam in the first inning and settled down nicely after that.
“Every game I start, it takes a few innings for me to get used to the crowd and the atmosphere,” said Gomm. “Except for the first inning, I thought I pitched pretty well. I tried to keep the ball low.”
Nate Hall’s game-opening line drive double to left and Kevin Proctor’s ground-ball single to right accounted for Bangor’s only run. Andy Tremble followed with an infield single but Gomm got two strikeouts and a popup to get out of the inning.
He struck out six and walked one while throwing 107 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Barrett and Dalton had two hits apiece for 3-1 Brewer and Harvey had his homer. Proctor and Andy Sullivan had two hits each for 3-2 Bangor. One of Sullivan’s hits was a double.
