Martha gets bad rap for July 4 party ad Other Stewarts tell public to stay away

MOUNT DESERT – Martha Stewart is having a lousy week. But it hasn’t got anything to do with the federal probe into possible insider trading or her company’s sinking stock value.

This time it’s about a local newspaper ad that notifies the public to stay away from “the Stewart residence” on Somes Sound this July 4th because the big holiday bash being held there is invitation-only and private.

Some people assumed it was a Martha Stewart party, since she has a summer home in the area.

But it’s not Martha.

Some people even thought the ad copy, crisp and terse, sounded a little like her, too, since Martha Stewart is known for her temper as well as her domestic advice on everything from flowers to figs.

But it’s not Martha.

“Please do not come to the Stewart residence looking for invitations or bracelets for this event because they do not have any to give out,” the ad, placed in several local weeklies, advises.

The quarter-page notice is invitingly titled “4th of July on the Sound” and then explains that without a bracelet or invitation “you will, unfortunately, not be allowed on the property and there can be no exceptions.”

Children under 13 without an adult, or a bracelet, also will be out of luck, the ad says.

Spectators may enjoy the fireworks if they stay far enough away from the Stewart dock – 500 feet by law, the ad says.

The announcement has stirred some interest because of the infamous incident two summers ago at Martha Stewart’s residence in Seal Harbor – one of several villages in the town of Mount Desert.

At the time, one of her employees barricaded a TV news crew in her driveway while Stewart called police.

Efforts made Wednesday to reach Martha Stewart’s publicist in New York City were unsuccessful.

A woman who called the Mike & Mike show on KISS 94.5 Wednesday morning unhappily noted that most people weren’t even aware of the big party and wondered why Martha Stewart thought it was necessary to publicize it only to tell people to stay away.

The problem is, however, that the party’s not at Martha Stewart’s place. It’s actually at the Northeast Harbor estate of the William Stewart family, which holds the event annually.

They apparently are not related to Martha Stewart.

Mike Elliott, one of the Mikes of Mike & Mike, said Wednesday that the KISS announcers quickly corrected the error after “a lot of people called” to say the woman was mistaken.

“From what we understand, this is another Stewart family that doesn’t have people arrested in their driveway,” Elliott said.

But on air, after making the correction, Elliott pointed out that Martha Stewart would not have time for a party any way “because we figure she’s going to be making doilies out of prison bed sheets.”

But even the announcers’ recollection of the driveway incident was wrong, according to Mount Desert Police Chief John Doyle.

He said no one was arrested in the incident at Martha Stewart’s home two summers ago; neither the high school kids who said they mistakenly drove onto her property in their rented limo, nor the news crew that showed up two days later looking for a story.

“She was defending her property,” Doyle said. “Under the constitution, she’s entitled to protect her property.

“If that had happened on my property, they would have been treated worse.”
