Some of the top young track and field athletes in the state, including three Orrington girls, have advanced to next month’s USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics in Omaha, Neb.
The athletes qualified for the national meet based on their finishes over the weekend at the Region I qualifier, which was held in Uniondale, N.Y. at the Mitchel Athletic Complex.
The top three finishers at the regional qualified for the July 23-28 national meet.
Stephanie Dickey and Susie Zitaner, who are both from Orrington, qualified for their third straight trip to nationals. They both compete in the intermediate age group (ages 15-16). Christine Thoms will join Zitaner and Dickey in Omaha. Thoms won the shot put in the youth age group (ages 13-14).
Dickey finished in second place in the discus and the javelin and was third in the shot put. Zitaner collected two third-place finishes, including the discus and the javelin.
Last year Dickey finished fourth in javelin throw at nationals, qualifying her for All-American status. She also placed 21st in the discus and 27th in the shot put.
Zitaner was 18th in the discus, 20th in the pole vault, and 24th in the high jump at last year’s national meet.
Other area qualifiers include Kelsey Woodbury of Morrill, who won the bantam (10-and-under) girls shot put and was second in the 1,500 racewalk and javelin. Laura Woodbury, also of Morrill, was first in the youth girls javelin and finished in second place in the discus.
Bangor’s Jessica Dunham was second in the youth high jump. Audra Curtis of Belfast took first place in the youth racewalk.
Katie Souviney, a Winslow High standout, won the heptathlon and hurdles and was third in the javelin in the young women’s age group (17-18).
