Maine 4-H Teen Conference

ORONO – As part of 4-H’s 100th birthday celebration, the Maine 4-H Teen Conference will take place June 28-30 at the University of Maine. The conference theme is “4-H, The Power of Youth.”

Activities planned are a mock Legislature session, making carved artwork from fruits and vegetables, swing dancing, self-defense, interactive theater, painting with everyday materials, managing stress, sign language and mask painting. Outdoor activities include canoeing, kayaking and a cookout by the river.

The community service component of the weekend conference is to give Beanie Babies to a local homeless shelter or hospital. Attendees are asked to bring a ‘critter’ to donate.

The cost of conference is $80, which includes room and board, and is open to children ages 12-19. For information, call Connie Adler, (877) 444-8623.

Glenburn Middle School

GLENBURN – Jolene Belanger of Glenburn has earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. The award was presented May 3 at the Glenburn Town Hall.

For her community service project Belanger planned an event at the Glenburn Library. She worked with children on crafts that related to the stories they were reading in the library. Belanger is a seventh-grader and is member of Troop 153.

Orono Middle School

ORONO – Orono Middle School named three pupils school Citizens of the Year at a breakfast June 14.

Each was presented a $50 gift certificate:

. Sixth-grader Lauren Wheeler.

. Seventh-grader Mike Zhang.

. Eighth-grader Emily Sypher.

The awards, said Principal Bob Lucy, are part of a school program designed to teach pupils to be fair, to respect others, to be responsible, to be tolerant and to create a climate where people are liked and respected.

Helping with classroom projects, keeping the school clean, tutoring or doing a personal act of kindness are some of the activities the program encourages.

Roberta Bradson, owner of Ampersand The Store, which sponsors the citizenship program, presented the awards.

Global Young Leaders

Natasha Grokh of Bangor has been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference, June 30-July 11, in Washington, D.C., and New York City. The conference is a unique leadership development program for secondary school students from around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Grokh will be among 350 outstanding scholars from around the world to attend the conference.

The conference theme is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for Global Challenges and Responsibility of the Future.” Grokh will interact with key leaders and newsmakers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy, and will take part in a carefully designed curriculum, which includes thought-provoking simulations to build leadership skills.

Her sponsors are Bangor Steel Service Inc., Bernatche Auto Body, George and Mary Ann Bostwick, Lewis and Mary Bliss Hassel.

An honor roll student at John Bapst Memorial High School, Grokh participates in a church youth group, Key Club, school yearbook, and has a part-time job at Shaw’s Supermarkets.

LEWISTON – Andrea L. Irwin of Brewer received a bachelor’s degree May 27. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history. A dean’s list student, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, participated in the Longley School Mentoring Program and held a Women’s History Month read-in during her time at Bates.

She graduated in 1998 from Brewer High School and is the daughter of Bonnie Irwin of Brewer and Ralph Irwin of Danbury, Conn.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sarah Mullen of Bangor graduated with honors May 19. The daughter of Jayne Dyer and Jim Mullen, Mullen received a degree in women’s studies. Mullen was named to the President’s Fellows for 2001-2002.

University of Maine

ORONO – Applied Materials Inc., the largest supplier of materials to the global semiconductor industry, donated $10,000 for scholarships for students in the department of electrical and computer engineering.

Randy Metivier, 1989 UMaine graduate and an account manager with Applied Materials, presented a check for the scholarship fund May 3 to Jim Patton, chairman of the electrical and computer engineering department.

“Applied Materials is pleased to contribute to the University of Maine’s microelectronics scholarship consortium,” said Jamie Hanson, director of east North America regional accounts, “and to continue our commitment to the development of engineering talent in our communities.”

ORONO – Prerequisites for effective teaching go beyond skills and knowledge, future teachers were told during their initiation into the University of Maine’s scholastic honor society for education majors.

A teacher’s beliefs about students’ interest and ability can result in equitable or inequitable attention and instruction, UMaine education professor Constance Perry told new members of Kappa Delta Pi.

“When teachers create an atmosphere of value and respect for all students, all students will achieve more academically,” Perry said, encouraging the aspiring teachers to be open to the needs and potential of even the most reluctant learners.

Members of Kappa Delta Pi must have reached their junior year with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and demonstrate leadership and commitment to education.

Initiated into Kappa Delta Pi this spring were Benjamin Johnson and Leigh Phillips, Bangor; Sarah Hamelin, Glenburn; Melissa Winslow, Old Town; Camilla Doak, Orono; and Karen Stedman, Stillwater.

University of Massachusetts

WORCESTER, Mass. – Eliza M. Parker of Bangor received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School on June 2 at ceremony held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

She is the daughter of Dr. H. Gary Parker and Susan T. Parker of Bangor, and is a 1990 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School.

Parker earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1994, and worked at Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical Center doing cystic fibrosis research before entering medical school. Parker will serve a residency in pediatrics at Cornell New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
