FORT FAIRFIELD – A Fort Fairfield man has been charged with multiple offenses after fleeing from police on an all-terrain vehicle.

The charges against David Churchill, 55, include operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, eluding a police officer, operating an ATV on a public way, operating after suspension of his driver’s license, resisting arrest and violation of bail conditions.

Churchill was spotted by Officers Nathan Jamo and Andrew Feeney of the Fort Fairfield Police Department at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday operating an ATV on Hill Street in Fort Fairfield.

The officers turned their cruiser around and turned on the car’s blue lights to get Churchill to stop, but he would not, according to Sgt. Raymond Saucier.

Churchill drove through intersections without stopping at stop signs onto Forest Avenue, where he was able to elude the officers by driving onto an ATV trail.

Soon police received a tip that Churchill was in the yard of his home on Forest Avenue. When Jamo and Feeney went to the residence, Churchill tried to flee on foot.

In doing so, Saucier said, he ran into Jamo, and a scuffle ensued before Churchill was taken into custody.

Churchill remained in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton on Friday. His combined bail has been set at $2,000 cash for the District Court charges of operating under the influence, failure to stop for an officer, violation of bail conditions, operating an ATV on a public way and operating after suspension of driver’s license.

No bail is allowed on the charges filed against Churchill in Superior Court for operating under the influence, speeding more than 30 mph over the posted speed limit and operating beyond driver’s license restriction.
