Police nab man for obstructing way Winslow resident accused of refusing to submit to arrest in Brewer

After Brewer police were called to Mill Street for a report of a man jumping on top of a taxicab early Saturday, another man was arrested after arguing with officers, officials said.

Police had been able to settle the problem with the man jumping onto the cab without charges, but Brewer police Officer Rich Smith said Heath Kinney, 28, of Winslow walked onto Mill Street and refused to leave when told to by officers who were concerned about traffic rounding a sharp turn nearby. The man ended up bumping an officer on the chest before wrestling with police, who used pepper spray to subdue him.

Kinney was charged with obstructing a public way and refusing to submit to arrest, Smith said. He will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Aug. 2.

An East Corinth woman avoided injury when a kayak fell off a truck passing by her and struck her car Sunday morning, police said.

Deedra Leavitt, 38, told police she was heading south on Broadway in Bangor when the kayak struck her 2002 Toyota. Ward Ordway, 40, of Southwest Harbor had been driving north in his 2002 Ford pickup when the kayak on his truck fell off and struck the driver’s side front fender and door of the Toyota, Officer Robert Hutchings said. Neither Ordway, his passenger, Leavitt nor her passenger was injured. Damage to Leavitt’s car was estimated at $3,000.

Two Scarborough-area men were arrested by Brewer police Friday night after officials noticed the men were following a motorcycle in a truck with its high beams on, police said.

The driver of the vehicle told police that he didn’t have his identification and that his name was David Dougherty. But when Officer Rich Smith checked the information, he found that the description and the man behind the wheel didn’t match, Smith said. When he explained to the driver that the height and the eye color were wrong, the man admitted that he was Donald Willette, 37, and that he had lied because his license was suspended.

Willette was charged with refusing to give a correct name, address and date of birth, and with operating a vehicle after suspension of his license, Smith said. The passenger in the vehicle, Richard Smith, 45, was wanted on a warrant for violation of probation.

The two were taken to Penobscot County Jail. Each will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Aug. 2.

An orange road-construction cone in Hampden led to the capture of two men from Winterport early Friday after they allegedly stole a van belonging to the Ramada Inn in Bangor, police said.

Hampden police Officer Ben Eyles saw two men standing in front of a van next to the department’s driveway, attempting to pull the cone from beneath the van.

One man, later identified as Justin Elliott, 19, jumped into the passenger seat of the van as the driver, Mark Sutherland, 18, began to walk toward Eyles. He reported that the situation was suspicious enough to handle as a felony stop, holding the two at gunpoint until backup arrived.

At first, Sutherland told police that the two had found the van, then admitted that they had stolen the van from the Ramada Inn, 357 Odlin Road, Eyles said. He said the keys had been left in the van. Sutherland and Elliott were both charged with unauthorized use of property; Sutherland was also charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, operating a vehicle without a license, and possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

In a search at the Penobscot County Jail, police found a small amount of marijuana in Sutherland’s possession and reported his blood alcohol level at 0.13 percent. Maine law requires zero percent for drivers under 21.

Officials at the Ramada Inn had not noticed that the vehicle was missing until police told them it had been found. They said the van had been left unlocked and was used for work around the hotel.
