BANGOR – A man accused of being involved in a fire that burned a quarter of Lincoln’s downtown area was indicted for arson Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury, which also indicted an Etna woman accused of setting her own home on fire.
In court documents, Wayne R. Osborne, 20, of Springfield denied setting the Jan. 20 fire that destroyed two Main Street building and displaced six businesses but admitted to giving a ride to the person who did set the fire. No one else has been charged, yet, with the fire, said Penobscot County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy.
Officials have said that the fire was financially motivated and that those involved were paid to start it. In light of the indictment on the felony arson charge, the case has been remanded to Penobscot County Superior Court.
Also indicted for arson was Paulette Schmidt, 49, of Etna, who was arrested May 9, the same day that firefighters were called to her Route 2 home to put out a fire that began in the kitchen area. A K-9 police dog detected an accelerant, believed to be gasoline, and Schmidt admitted to setting fire to the home that she and her husband had been renovating, according to police.
Almy said that a mental health examination had been ordered for Schmidt, who claimed she had admitted herself voluntarily to Acadia Hospital in Bangor last year for depression. She was released two weeks later and told authorities that she had not been on any medications or under a
doctor’s care since then.
The grand jury also indicted David A. Bates, 41, of Lincoln on charges of attempted murder, attempted elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a firearm. The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 18, 2001, when, authorities say, Bates drove by a Lowell residence and fired shots into the home, nearly hitting the man living there, Almy said.
The subject of Bates’ wrath was a man who had been seeing Bates’ girlfriend, according to authorities.
