ORRINGTON – Selectmen have appointed a new town clerk to succeed Carole Hardin, who retired last month after a 35-year career with the town.

Orrington resident Anita Demmons, former deputy town clerk and secretary to the town manager, was appointed to her new post by selectmen during a meeting last week. She assumed her new duties on Monday.

Demmons has been a member of the municipal staff for about eight years, Town Manager Dexter Johnson said Monday. She is certified as a town clerk by the Maine Municipal Association.

Because the municipal staff is undergoing some job restructuring, Demmons’ salary has not been set, Johnson said. He said Demmons will meet with selectmen next week to discuss pay and benefits as well as the scope of her responsibilities.
