BANGOR – Hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching … the Bangor Comrades did a little bit of everything Tuesday night an American Legion matchup against Penquis.

And the Comrades did it all well.

Bangor scored three runs in the third and four more in the fourth in a 7-2 victory over the Navigators at a warm, breezy Mansfield Stadium.

The Comrades are now 7-3 in Legion play. Penquis falls to 4-4.

Defensively, Bangor pitcher Josh Young scattered five hits and had near-perfect defense behind him.

Offensively, getting on base – whether by hit, error, walk, dropped third strike or hit-by-pitch – and challenging the Penquis fielders by legging out hits made a big difference.

The Comrades had baserunners in the first two innings, although both players got aboard with two outs.

But in the third, Bangor’s Tyler Jellison drew a leadoff walk. He got to second on a Kevin Proctor single and scored on a single by Andy Tremble. Proctor went to third on Tremble’s hit and Tremble stole second.

Proctor and Tremble scrambled home on Andy Sullivan’s hard shot in the air to center field, which turned out to provide the winning runs.

Sullivan finished the game with two singles and three RBIs. He plated Tremble in the fourth.

“The games that we’ve won this year we’ve had really timely hits with runners in scoring position,” said Sullivan, who singled twice and drove in three runs.

Tremble getting himself into scoring position was certainly key to the third inning. In the fourth Bangor stole second three times, and all three baserunners eventually scored.

“We really do have excellent speed on this team and everyone in this lineup is extremely aggressive,” said Andy Treadwell (two singles, one RBI).

Penquis coach Rob St. Louis said his team had trouble with Young, who walked two and struck out five over six innings.

“We just met a better pitcher,” he said. “He was on, throwing strikes, and we just couldn’t hit him.”

Bangor fielders recorded 14 outs and an error.

“To have just one error tonight is definitely an improvement,” Treadwell said.

Brian White led the Navigators with an RBI single in both the fourth and sixth innings. Seth Gabbarro was 2-for-3 with a single and a double, the only extra-base hit in the game.

Jason Weymouth was solid in the loss, walking just two and striking out four. He fanned the final batter of the third with the bases loaded.

“He threw the ball well tonight, they just got the key hits,” St. Louis said.
