As a result of the recent primary elections, the issue of health care has been a pervasive topic of discussion. The consuming public is correctly focused on affordability. There is yet another point of contention, equally as insidious, that must be mentioned: employer indifference.
I am disabled by an ischemic cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure. Considered an inactive employee, I have heretofore been able to buy health coverage through the employer’s group plan. For the upcoming health coverage year, I have not been accorded that opportunity.
Despite a written request, no explanation has been forthcoming. In my own situation, a lack of health care options will have serious, perhaps fatal, consequences.
As in the world at large, there is no assurance that a local Maine institution will act responsibly toward its employees and do the right thing.
