Increased security the holiday norm Extra local law enforcement staffing not prompted by terrorist threats

BANGOR – According to law enforcement officials in the Bangor area, extra staff will be on duty for the July Fourth holiday as they are every year, but no additional precautions will be taken to address concerns over possible terrorist incidents.

Bangor City Manager Edward Barrett said the city will not do anything it hasn’t done in previous years for the July Fourth celebration.

“We do have some additional personnel on duty,” Barrett said, adding that the increase in personnel is part of city policy for July Fourth.

Deputy Chief Peter Arno of the Bangor Police Department said the number of officers on duty Thursday will double, but not because of potential terrorist threats to the United States.

“We do have a pretty significant amount of extra people on duty,” Arno said. “We’re not detailing people just because of the perceived threats.”

Arno said up to 20 officers may be patrolling Bangor’s streets during the holiday.

Chief Deputy Glenn Ross of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said his department will be overstaffed and more officers would be placed on duty if “a specific incident arose.”

The United States Coast Guard will have extra personnel ready for the holiday, but it is doing nothing out of the ordinary.

“We’re, of course, going to be a little more cautious,” said Seaman Chris Galindo of the Southwest Harbor USCG station. He said two ships would be sent to Bar Harbor for security, but that is not unusual.

According to Lt. Herbert Morse of the Maine State Police, July Fourth will be business as usual in the Bangor area with a few extra troopers on duty.

“Everyone that can work will be working,” said Morse. No special security precautions will be taken, he said, and state police Troop E in Orono does not have the financial capability to provide overtime for extra manpower.
