Vacant apartment fire in Houlton intentional

HOULTON – The State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate a Sunday night fire intentionally set in a vacant apartment.

A third-floor resident of Broadway Apartments at 3 Broadway alerted the Houlton Fire Department at about 7:40 p.m. about a possible fire in Apartment D on the third floor.

Richard Crone of Houlton owns the building.

Firefighters found the door to the apartment was unlocked. All the burners on the electric stove had been turned on high and aluminum burner covers placed over them. The covers had melted. A fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire on top of the stove.

Firefighters discovered drains had been plugged in sinks in the kitchen and the bathroom, and the water had been left running.

Ed Archer, an investigator with the fire marshal’s office, said Tuesday the fire was set intentionally. The Houlton Police Department is also investigating the fire.
