Brewer High School

BREWER – A local high school student learned that drinking milk pays off in more ways than just for helping to build strong bones.

Christopher Paul Sighinolfi, a senior at Brewer High School, was honored as one of 25 winners from across the country to receive the “Got Milk” Milk Mustache campaign’s Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year award.

Sighinolfi was selected from 30,000 applicants by a celebrity judge panel consisting of milk mustache athletes Kurt Warner, Cal Ripken Jr., Marion Jones, Mat Hoffman, Mia Hamm, Pete Sampras and Tony Hawk.

As part of the award, Sighinolfi will receive a $7,500 college scholarship and a starring role in his own milk mustache ad, appearing in USA Today, Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine. He also will join 100 past winners in the new milk mustache Hall of Fame, located at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.

A student council and class president, Sighinolfi was chosen for his academic and athletic achievements as well as leadership qualities. When not cramming for an exam or competing on the swim or track teams, Sighinolfi is a Key Club volunteer and a 2001 peer tutor award winner.

The award winners were recognized at an awards ceremony at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

Leroy Smith School

WINTERPORT – The children’s library on the eighth floor at Eastern Maine Medical Center just got bigger thanks to pupils at the Leroy Smith School in Winterport. This past winter students took part in “Read for 2002,” a nationwide reading program where pennies were pledged for each of the 2,002 seconds the children read.

The pupils decided to use the more than $400 they raised to buy books and other items for EMMC’s pediatrics. Additionally, students in the Smith School’s “Time to Care Program” made small tote bags that will be given to children who are recovering from an illness. Gloria Aurillo, a Winterport parent and owner of Abacus, The Learning Store, used her buyer’s discount to purchase the books for the school and she added donations of her own to the program.

During a recent presentation of the books, toys, and tote bags, EMMC child life specialist Nakia Marchand called the gift “remarkable,” and added, “The gifts will bring countless hours of enjoyment to many children.”

Orono High School

ORONO – Brandon Terrill, son of Arthur Terrill and Evelyn Beaulieu; Justin Kachan, son of Zigfried Kachan and Lee Cummings; and Jennifer Dunham, daughter of Pinonpan Saritvanich were selected by students to speak at the June 9 Orono High School graduation exercises.

Terrill and Dunham will attend the University of Maine, and Kachan will attend the University of Southern Maine.

Molly Dupre was chosen class marshall. The daughter of Raymond Dupre and Catherine Smith, she will attend Emerson College.

Mike Morcom and Marc Halstead were parent speaker and faculty speaker at baccalaureate exercises.

New York, N.Y. – Sarah Kovenock of Orono graduated this May from Columbia University.

Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Hampden native Gabriel A. Brooks graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and received a bachelor of arts degree at the June 9 ceremony.

Brooks, son of Astri and Phillip Brooks, majored in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Eastern Maine Technical College

BANGOR – Twelve students graduated from the medical radiography program at Eastern Maine Technical College.

They are Denise England, William Graves, Kimberly Giles and Kate Marquis, all of Bangor; Kara Bell of Dover-Foxcroft, Cindy Bourgoin of Fort Kent, Kelly Deering of St. Albans, Annette Fournier of Brewer, Terry Grant of East Corinth, Randy Mooers of Howland and Kelly Thomas and Sarah Trask, both of Hampden.

Commencement exercises were held at June 28 at Rangeley Hall. The commencement address was given by George Bernhardt, physics research scientist at the University of Maine.

BANGOR – Brad Adams was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. He is the son of Rosemary and Gary Adams of Bradley.

Emory University

ATLANTA Ga. – Stephanie Jenkins of Bangor, daughter of Michael and Patricia Jenkins, was named to the dean’s list for the 2002 spring semester.

Rebecca Corey of Brewer received a master’s degree in public health from the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University May 13.

Endicott College

BEVERLY, Ma. – Annie Fitzpatrick of Winterport, daughter of Mark and Ruth Fitzpatrick, has been named to the dean’s list. She is a junior majoring in liberal studies education.

Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bangor residents Matthew Cammack, Jennifer Kirstein and Brooke Rideout have been named to the dean’s list for the spring term.

Maine Criminal Justice Academy

VASSALBORO – The ranks of Maine’s law enforcement community have increased by 57 new officers graduating from the new Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro. They included four state troopers, eight deputy sheriffs and 43 officers from towns, cities and other state agencies.

The graduation speaker was Maine Secretary of State Dan Gwadosky.

The 18 weeks of study and training included such topics as: criminal and traffic law, domestic violence, firearms, sexual assault, first aid, crime scene processing, and emergency vehicle operation.

The graduates included Dennis K. Townsend, Bangor Police; Lee L. Miller, Veazie Police; Sean F. McCue and Mark A. Lloyd, Penobscot Sheriff’s Dept.

Northwood University

MIDLAND, Mich. – John Quirk, son of John Quirk of Brewer, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring term.

Savannah College of Art and Design

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Andrew John Lee of Brewer achieved the dean’s list for the spring quarter. He is a computer art major and is the son of Carroll Lee of Brewer.
