MONROE – A Thorndike woman picked the wrong time Monday to pass a line of cars traveling on Route 141: Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story was at the head of the line in an unmarked cruiser.

Crystal Philbrook, 20, of Thorndike was arrested after she attempted to outrun the sheriff and wound up hitting a granite World War II monument at the intersection of Routes 141 and 139 in the center of town.

Philbrook was uninjured in the wreck.

She was arrested on charges of failure to stop for an officer, driving to endanger and exceeding the posted speed limit by 30 mph.

According to Deputy Sheriff Ryan Porter, the arresting officer, the incident began about 4 p.m. Monday on Route 141. Porter said Sheriff Story was traveling north at the head of a line of cars when a 1985 Chevrolet Camaro passed him.

Porter said the sheriff turned on his blue lights and briefly gave chase, but backed off when the fleeing vehicle attained an estimated speed of 90 mph. The speed limit on that section of the road is 50 mph.

Porter said Philbrook apparently lost control of the vehicle when she reached the intersection and attempted to turn left onto Route 139. The Camaro skidded across the road and slammed into the granite monument.

Damage to the car’s front end was extensive, Porter said. The World War II monument was undamaged.

Philbrook was arrested at the scene and taken to the Waldo County Jail.
