Warren leads Amateur; Spector third at NEWGA

FALMOUTH – Shawn Warren, a 16-year-old who plays out of the Woodlands Club in Falmouth, fired a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the 83rd Maine Amateur Golf Championship at Falmouth Country Club on Tuesday.

Kennebunk’s Tom Bean lurks one shot back while Portland’s David Niles surprised everyone, including himself, by firing a two-under par 70.

Playing in one of the last five groups of the day, Niles never three-putted en route to the 70.

Chris Marco and James Frost Jr. shot rounds of 72 while Ricky Jones, Scott Stone, Alan Bouchard, Jay Livingston and Joe Manganaro each fired a 73.

The players will play another round of stroke-play golf today before the field is culled down to 16 players for the match-play segment of the tourney.

Spector tied for third

GREENLAND, N.H. – Defending champion Abby Spector of Waterville, Maine, fired a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for third place after one round of the New England Women’s Golf Association Championship at Portsmouth Country Club.

Haley Gildea of Rhode Island leads the tourney after her first-round 69, while Laura Shanahan-Rowe of New Hampshire shot a 70. Dana Harrity and Spector are tied at 71 while former University of Vermont basketball star Libby Smith and Abigail Vernon of Massachusetts fired identical 72s.

Alyssa Hayes of Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth was tied for 12 place at 75, while Lamoine’s Tiffany Shoppe was tied for 22nd at 79.

The NEWGA Championship is a three-day tourney, with the field cut to the top 70 players (including ties) after Wednesday’s round.
