At its June 26 meeting, the Bangor Humane Society named the following people to its 2003 board of directors:

Patty Amisano, Susan Bernier, Mike Dow, Don Hanson, Kelli Theriault Hutchins, Christine Longtin, Lisa Cohen Lunn, Leanne Warner Parks, Cyndi Rollins, Arthur Verow, Mary (Kissy) Walker and Melinda Lord.

Ronald McDonald House on State Street held a groundbreaking ceremony July 1 to mark the beginning of a building renovation. Two units with space for four individuals or two families will be added.

Ronald McDonald House serves children and families who face medical situations that require them to be close to medical centers and who need a home away from home.

Bill Lovejoy of Bangor has been named vice president and branch manager of the University Credit Union’s new Bangor office located at 977 Union St.

Lovejoy has worked for 30 years in the financial service industry. His past experience includes working as a loan specialist and as acting chief for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Bangor Mayor Michael Crowley has cited Jack Donovan and the Coe Management Group for their “sustained example of outstanding personal and business citizenship in downtown Bangor.”

A City Council proclamation June 24 recognized the Coe Management Groups’ marketing of the Exchange Building to the arts community resulted in a significant increase in the population of working artists in the downtown area. In addition, the management group provided material assistance to the tenants of the Exchange Building, making it possible for them to stay and thrive in the aftermath of the April 2000 fire.

In a second City Council proclamation issued June 24, Bangor Mayor Michael Crowley recognized the Bangor Police Department for its contribution to the betterment of the community. According to the citation, Bangor police officers have volunteered thousands of hours to benefit the Police Athletic League, Special Olympics, American Lung Association, Ronald McDonald House, American Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy Association and Make a Wish Foundation.

The Bangor Museum and Center for History has received a $7,500 grant from the Davis Family Foundation in Falmouth.

Green Acres Kennel Shop owners Don and Paula Hanson are featured in the July-August issue of Pet Services Journal, the magazine of the American Boarding Kennel Association.

The Greater Bangor Open will be host for the first GBO Junior Golf Clinic at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Children of all ages are welcome to attend free of charge.

Professional golfers playing in the Greater Bangor Open golf tournament July 25-27 will instruct junior golfers in grip, stance, alignment, swing principles, rules and making shots.

Laura Giorgio, a student at Bangor High School, has won second place in the fourth annual Maine Student Writing Awards for her poem “Vespers.” She will be honored at the Maine Arts Commission’s Artist Recognition Day in September.

Manna Ministries is appealing to residents to aid the needy people the food kitchen serves each day. Supplies needed are macaroni and cheese, large cans of any vegetables, chicken and hamburger than can be cooked at Manna and canned, O-shaped spaghetti.

Sunscreen lotion also is needed.

Brewer

The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department has announced the schedule for the Brewer Hometown Band’s Summer Park Concert series:

. Thursday, July 11 – Sunset Park;

. Thursday, July 25 – Indian Trail Park;

. Thursday, Aug. 8 – to be announced;

. Thursday, Aug. 22 – Doyle Field.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are free. Rain location is the Brewer Auditorium. For information, call 989-5199.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Brewer Aerie has elected officers for the 2002-2003 year. They are:

Dennis Witham, state aerie trustee; Larry Dawson, state aerie treasurer; Lucille Guay, state auxiliary vice president; Barbara Witham, state auxiliary secretary; Carmen Sanborn, state auxiliary trustee; and Judy Bladen, state auxiliary trustee.

The Brewer Parks and Recreation and the Brewer Police Department will hold a Bike Safety Rodeo at 1 a.m. Friday, July 19.

Police officers and officials from other law enforcement and safety agencies will conduct safety inspections, hand out bicycle helmets while supplies last and test youngsters for riding ability. The program is open to Brewer residents and is free of charge.

The Parks and Recreation Department is planning a North American Sport Camp Major League Soccer Clinic 9 a.m.-noon July 29-Aug 2 at Doyle Field. The program is open to children ages 6-12.

Participants will receive instruction, a hand-stitched soccer ball, camp T-shirt, companion ticket to Major Soccer League game and a camp goody bag.

The fee for the camp is $100 for Brewer residents and $115 for nonresidents.

The Munchkin program at 9-10:30 a.m. and also set for July 29-Aug. 2, is open to children ages 5 and 6. It includes a soccer ball, T-shirt and instruction. The fee is $65 for Brewer residents and $75 for nonresidents. For information, call 989-5199.

Glenburn

Scotty Mitchell, 8, and Alex Mitchell, 17, sons of Scott and Janice Mitchell, will attend Concordia Language Villages in Moorhead, Minn. Scott will attend a one-week session July 8-13. Alex will attend a one-month session July 8-Aug. 3 for which he will earn high school credit. They will study Russian language and culture.

By being immersed in language and culture, village participants experience a simulated visit to another country. They are issued passports, exchange currency and adopt new names. They take part in holiday celebrations, re-enact historic events, sing, dance and play games. Authentic foods also are part of the experience.

Scotty is a student at Bangor Christian School and Alex attends Kent School in Kent, Conn.

Greenbush

Hampden

Hampden Historical Society will hold Antique Appraisal Day 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Kinsley House. Appraisal fees are $5 for the first item, $3 for the second and $2 for the third. There is a three-item limit. For information, call Betty at 862-2027 or 942-0010.

Old Town

Randy Nason, general manager of Signature Professional Cleaning, recently received Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration certification in applied microbial remediation and OSHA health and safety.
