NEWPORT – Fire Chief Charles Erickson was arrested Sunday night and charged with domestic assault, officials said Wednesday.

Newport police Sgt. Sanger Davis refused to comment on the nature of the assault, but did confirm that the fire chief was arrested at the fire station Sunday night after the incident had occurred earlier in the day, Davis said. The assault did not take place at the fire station.

The 44-year-old Erickson was released from the Newport Police Department on personal recognizance bail and will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Aug. 21.

Erickson, who has served as Newport fire chief for more than a decade, has not been relieved of his duties, Newport Police Chief James Ricker said.

Officials for the Penobscot Regional Communications Center, where Erickson is also employed as a dispatcher, were not immediately available for comment.
