Carvers, artists to hold competition in Belfast

BELFAST – The 14th annual Maine Coast Carving and Art Competition will take place July 19-July 21 at the Boathouse on Front Street in Belfast. This event is sponsored by the Penobscot Bay Carvers and Artists Association and features the work or area carvers, artists and photographers. Many will also attend from other New England states and along the Eastern Seaboard.

Entries must be registered by the competitors from noon to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 19. The public is not admitted on this day but on Saturday and Sunday, at no charge, they will have an opportunity to view the carvings, paintings and photographs presented. The show is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A special treat for carvers this year will be the yard sale held by MDI Woodcarvers Supply. Other exhibitors and a wood vendor will also have their products for sale. A raffle of two carved items will take place with the drawing held on Sunday at about noon. These items are a 12-inch Santa by George Gunning of Windsor, and an Old Squaw duck decoy by Walt Simmons of Lincolnville.

There will be all levels of entry, from novice to masters. The cost for each entry is $5, except for master level, which is $10 per entry.
