GREENLAND, N.H. – Laura Shanahan-Rowe fired a 4-under-par 68 during Friday’s final round and secured the New England Women’s Golf Association Championship with a three-day total of 209.
Shanahan-Rowe, the 2001 U.S. Mid Amateur Champion, posted a five-stroke victory over defending tournament champion Abby Spector of Waterville.
The 21-year-old Spector, who has captured the last six Women’s Maine State Golf Association crowns, closed out the NEWGA Championship with a 1-under 71. She posted a three-day total of 214.
First-round leader Haley Gildea of Rhode Island bounded back with a 74 Thursday to finish third at 220. Former University of Vermont basketball standout Libby Smith and Dana Harrity of New Hampshire tied for fourth at 228, 19 strokes off the pace.
Shanahan-Rowe had held second place after the first round, but shot 71 Wednesday to move into the lead for good.
Alyssa Hayes, who plays at Purpoodock Country Club in Cape Elizabeth, finished 13th at 237 after a final-round 77, while Lamoine’s Tiffany Shoppe struggled to an 87 Thursday and wound up tied for 31st place.
