Extension offers youngsters food, field trips, fun

Youngsters entering grades four, five and six who want something fun, educational and nutritious to do this summer are invited to attend “Come Eat with Me,” a summer program sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office in Bangor.

The program offers youngsters an opportunity to enjoy field trips, outdoor fun and arts and crafts activities while helping prepare, and eat, tasty snack foods that focus on Maine products.

Enrollment is limited to 15 youngsters per site, and parents must provide transportation for their children to and from the program. All sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

The first session is Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17, at the Extension office at 307 Maine Ave. in Bangor.

I spoke with Extension nutrition aide Gail Lane, who is teaching the program with Catherine Davis.

Lane told me people who want to register children for this session can do so by calling the Extension office, 942-7396 or (800) 287-1485, after 8 a.m. Monday, July 15, or register at the site Monday morning.

Other sessions are Wednesday, July 24, to Friday, July 26, at the Brewer Auditorium; Tuesday, July 30, to Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Housing Authority on Davis Road in Bangor; and Tuesday, Aug. 13, to Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Sebasticook Community Center in Newport.

For more information or to register, call Lane, Davis or Extension educator Louise Kirkland at the numbers listed.

Today is a very special day for Wilma Wolford of Etna.

At her home with family and friends, Wolford will celebrate the 25th anniversary of her kidney transplant, which took place July 13, 1977, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

“At the time, they had to bring in a team of doctors to perform the operation,” Wolford recalled. “Now, they have them right there, and they do it all the time.”

The donor, Sandra Murphy of Etna, will be at the party to help her sister celebrate this family milestone.

Administrative Assistant Kimberly Horn reports openings are still available for the second annual Women’s Golf Tournament to benefit the Good Samaritan Agency that begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Friday, July 19, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

The fund-raiser is $50 per person plus $5 per person for those who want a cart.

A complementary golf clinic precedes the tournament, and a social hour follows.

Women golfers can register as individuals or as members of a team.

Spaces can be reserved by calling Good Samaritan Agency, 942-7211 or (800) 249-1811, or by e-mail at goodsam@midmaine.com.

Good Samaritan Agency, located at 100 Ridgewood Drive in Bangor, is celebrating its 100th year of fulfilling its purpose of assisting “individuals who have special needs concerning pregnancy and parenting, to gain the services and support they need to improve the quality of their lives.”

The Bangor Nature Club is sponsoring a bus trip to Brooksville and Deer Isle leaving at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, from Cameron Field on Mount Hope Avenue in Bangor.

The public is invited. Tickets are $22 for nonmembers and $20 for members.

You should bring your own lunch. The trip includes a stop at the studio of Joe Rizzo, where a light snack will be provided, and an afternoon visit at Ames Lily Pond.

To register, call Ruth Barker, 942-5977, or Muriel Frati, at 262-7145.

On behalf of the Bangor High School Music Boosters, Lorna Willey wrote the Bangor Daily News to extend “many thanks to the merchants and patrons who supported the music students … with the purchase of an ad in the Music Boosters’ program book for the 2001-2002 school year.”

Willey extends special thanks to Irv Marsters and folks at Bangor Letter Shop “for producing professional programs” for five major concerts, “enabling us to make a considerable profit from our fund-raiser.”

With your help and support, the BHS Music Boosters assisted the music students by producing 2,800 concert programs that would become keepsakes; awarding two scholarships; providing printed music for competition; making a financial contribution for band uniforms; paying for educational tours to Williamsburg and Nautica Museum when 170 BHS students competed in a Virginia invitational music festival; and offered trip sponsorships to 20 students, along with a box lunch for all participants.

Willey added the BHS Music Boosters have engaged internationally acclaimed jazz legend Maynard Ferguson “for a return concert and clinic in the fall of 2002, and all area high schools will be invited to participate.”

“It’s been an exciting and successful year,” she concluded. “We are blessed with a generous community. Thank you!”
