WISCASSET – A Lincoln County sheriff’s lieutenant was placed on administrative leave after being charged with domestic assault.

Maine State Police arrested Clayton Jordan, 48, in the early morning hours of July 8 and charged him with domestic assault for an incident that allegedly occurred the previous night.

The alleged assault involved Jordan’s wife and stepson and remains under investigation by state police.

State police Lt. Jeffrey Trafton said he filed a report with the District Attorney’s Office, which has asked the Attorney General’s Office to handle the case.

Trafton said there is “probable cause” to believe that domestic assault did occur against Jordan’s wife and stepson.

District Attorney Geoffrey A. Rushlau said his office generally would not handle cases involving an officer that prosecutors have worked with.

Jordan, a patrol supervisor, was booked and released from the county jail on $1,000 unsecured bail.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court Aug. 21.

Telephone calls to Jordan’s home were refused.

Correction: A Lincoln County sheriff’s lieutenant has been charged with assault, not the sheriff, as a headline in Saturday’s State section misreported.
