SAN DIEGO – Former University of Maine baseball star Mark Sweeney was released by the San Diego Padres Sunday.

Sweeney, an infielder-outfielder, hit .169 in 48 games. He was activated from the disabled list June 26 after sitting out 20 days with a strained right oblique.

Sweeney received All-America honors while playing at UMaine. He was chosen by the California Angels with their 10th round pick in the 1991 draft. He was traded to St. Louis in 1995 where he made his major league debut.

Sweeney played for the Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers and had two stints with the Padres. He has a career batting average of .253 in 576 major league at bats. He has 16 career home runs and 101 RBIs.
