FRANKFORT – A woman whose vehicle flipped in a single-vehicle crash on the North Searsport Road Tuesday was taken by ambulance and helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The woman, identified as April Stevens, age and residence unknown, was still being evaluated Tuesday evening, a nursing supervisor said. The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m.

Stevens was traveling south when the passenger side wheels on the 1989 Ford Bronco II she was driving apparently got caught in soft sand.

Stevens may have tried to bring the vehicle back onto the pavement too suddenly, because it appeared to have flipped over at least once, landing in the northbound lane.

Several gouges in the pavement were evident, possible evidence of the vehicle rolling over. The passenger side of the vehicle was crushed, and the windshield shattered. Most of the contents of the vehicle – tools and personal items – were strewn along the road in the northbound lane.

One man who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident said Stevens was lying in grass at the side of the road when he arrived.

Emergency medical technicians from the Searsport ambulance service responded, as did the Frankfort Fire Department and members of the North Searsport Fire Department. Searsport police and Waldo County Sheriff’s Department deputies also answered the report.

A state police officer arrived about an hour after the accident to complete a reconstruction of the crash.
