Bangor

Karl Anderson has joined the commercial lending department at Bangor Savings Bank, having transferred from Bangor Securities Inc. He was promoted to the position of trust and investment adviser in July 2001.

Anderson has prior lending experience with the Bank of Boston. He has served as chief financial officer and assistant executive director of United States Skiing. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Maine.

Anderson served as a member of the executive board of the U.S. Olympic committee; a member of the athletes advisory council to the U.S. Olympic committee; and a member of the board of directors of the United States Skiing Association. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in June 2001.

Joel Walton, author of “Positive Puppy Training Works,” will present a workshop at Green Acres Kennel Shop 5-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5.

Walton is a certified pet dog trainer with 20 years’ experience breeding and raising Labrador retrievers. He said he teaches canine etiquette with love and without physical punishment.

Topics covered in the workshop will be house training, chewing, mouthing, jumping up and learning to be left alone.

Brewer

Lt. Gov. Herb Hopkins of Division 3 just returned from the 87th annual Kiwanis International Convention in New Orleans where it was announced that the New England District was named a Distinguished District. Gov. Steven Hill also received honors for membership and club development.

Other members from Maine attending the convention included Art Tilley, New England District secretary; Lt. Governor-elect Bill Newberry; Past Distinguished Lt. Governor Jane Newberry; Lt. Governor Alice Savage, District 4; Carolyn Perry, New England District treasurer; and Lt. Governor Tim McMahon, District 2.

Sachi Noel Cote has received a full scholarship to the Bates College Summer Dance Festival in Lewiston for two weeks in July. She was one of 90 chosen from more than 4,000 applicants. She is a student at Northern Lights Dance Studio in Brewer.

Hermon

The 4th annual Tom McCrea Law Enforcement Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 3 at Hermon Meadow Golf Club to benefit the Thomas O. McCrea Endowment Fund at the Heart Center of Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The tournament was established as a memorial to McCrea who died of heart disease in 1998. He served in the Maine State Police from 1955-1977 and was a jail administrator with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department 1985-1995.

The fee for the tournament is $60 and includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, a bag of goodies, prizes and a barbecue. Registration deadline is July 19. Space is limited to 32 teams. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Orono

The Orono-Old Town Kiwanis Charity Auction is celebrating its 55th anniversary at The Barn on Forest Avenue in Orono July 18-20. Jim Dill and Steve Coburn are co-chairmen.

Gates open Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. and the auction runs 7 p.m. to midnight. On Saturday, gates open at 3 p.m. and the auction runs from 7 p.m to midnight or until all items are sold.

New and used goods are sold at the auction each night, and direct sales also are made at the toy barn, book barn, trash and treasures house and the white goods annex.

A refreshment stand will offer popcorn, hot dogs and ice cream. A food sale will be held Saturday morning on the lawn at Merrill Merchants Bank.

Prizes for the raffle are a Loon III kayak donated by Old Town Canoe; a star log cabin queen-sized quilt made and donated by Barbara Ross; a Trek 820 mountain bike donated by Rose Bicycle; a $100 gift certificate donated by Old Town Shop ‘n Save; and a $150 gift certificate donated by Cyr Northstar Tours. Raffle tickets are available from any Kiwanis member and will be sold during the auction.

Senior League All-Star Tournament Team members from Orono and Veazie are J. T. Davis, Nathan Faulstick, Matt Grimes, Jamie Hardy, Kevin Kotredes, Ryan Levesque, Kevin McAvoy, Alex Means, Jeff Miller, Keith Nason, Andrew Otis, Andrew Patterson, Brian Roach and Duston Thomas.
