Maine Student Writing Awards

BRUNSWICK – Several area students have been named as winners of the fourth annual Maine Student Writing Awards. The annual statewide competition for high school students is the only contest of its kind for young Maine writers. It is sponsored by the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Arts Commission, and is made possible by the support of Verizon.

The contest recognizes outstanding young writers in a public forum and also seeks to foster literacy and to encourage more students to consider writing careers.

The competition is open to all high school-age children, including those who are home-schooled. Three winners were selected in each category.

The winners will be honored at the Maine Arts Commission’s Artist Recognition Day in September. They also will read from their works at the Maine Festival at Thomas Point in Brunswick at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.

Local winners included:

Fiction: honorable mention, Kiel Figgins of Hampden Academy and Michael Munson of Orono High School.

Poetry: first place, Kathryn Meade of Orono High School for “After Adrienne Rich;” second place, Laura Georgio of Bangor High School for “Vespers.”

Orono High School

Katherine Mitchell, who will attend Smith College in the fall, was one of the top 11 seniors honored during graduation ceremonies June 9. She is the daughter of Holly Mitchell; and of Harbour and Carolyn Mitchell.

Colleges

Bates College

LEWISTON – Lindsey Dilts, daughter of George and Page Dilts of Winterport, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. A 1999 graduate of Hampden Academy, Dilts is studying psychology.

Boston University

BOSTON – Terra May Curtis of Bangor accepted membership in the National Honor Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at Boston University.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a highly selective national nonprofit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically.

Franklin Pierce College

RINDGE, N.H. – Derek Rodgerson of Newburgh was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Merrimack College

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Sarah Aylward and Amy-Jo Crawford, both of Hampden, have been named to the dean’s list.

Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Brooke E. Hayes, daughter of Robert and Diane Regan Hayes of Bangor, received a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Middlebury College at the commencement ceremony May 26. Hayes graduated with honors: college scholar, two terms; dean’s list, two terms.

New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. – Erin Boehmer, daughter of Mark and Rebecca Boehmer of Bangor, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Kelly Wellman of Winterport has been named to the dean’s list for the third quarter. A third year student in the College of Science, she is studying diagnostic medical sonography. Wellman, daughter of Galen and Debra Wellman of Winterport, is 1999 graduate of Hampden Academy.

Springfield University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Benjamin Stanwood of Holden has been named to the dean’s list for the spring term. Stanwood is a sophomore majoring in sports management.

University of New England

BIDDEFORD – Amanda Rodgerson of Newburgh graduated with a degree in science May 11. She was named to the spring dean’s list, and will begin graduate studies in August at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
