Maine Student Writing Awards
BRUNSWICK – Several area students have been named as winners of the fourth annual Maine Student Writing Awards. The annual statewide competition for high school students is the only contest of its kind for young Maine writers. It is sponsored by the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Arts Commission, and is made possible by the support of Verizon.
The contest recognizes outstanding young writers in a public forum and also seeks to foster literacy and to encourage more students to consider writing careers.
The competition is open to all high school-age children, including those who are home-schooled. Three winners were selected in each category.
The winners will be honored at the Maine Arts Commission’s Artist Recognition Day in September. They also will read from their works at the Maine Festival at Thomas Point in Brunswick at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
Local winners included:
Fiction: honorable mention, Kiel Figgins of Hampden Academy and Michael Munson of Orono High School.
Poetry: first place, Kathryn Meade of Orono High School for “After Adrienne Rich;” second place, Laura Georgio of Bangor High School for “Vespers.”
