Lewiston man fatally shot at central Maine campground

GREENE – Law enforcement authorities evacuated a campground, blocked roads and searched the woods for a suspect after a Lewiston man was shot to death Thursday morning at a campground.

Aaron Devoe, 37, was alone in his camper trailer at the Allen Pond Campground when he was shot around 7:15 a.m., according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The suspect, Anthony Vellaro, 31, formerly of Poland, fled into the woods wearing black shorts and sneakers, McCausland said. Vellaro left his truck at the campground.

Vellaro had been staying in a pup tent in the adjacent campsite for the last few days. He had recently been evicted from his home in Poland.

Investigators were still trying to determine what led to the shooting, McCausland said.

More than 60 law enforcement officials are participating in the manhunt. They include state troopers and members of the state police tactical team, along with sheriff’s deputies and wardens. A state police plane also was participating in the search.

Devoe’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, where it will be determined how many times Devoe was shot, McCausland said.
