Thorndike, Clinton awarded fire grants

WASHINGTON – Fire departments in Clinton, Thorndike and Sinclair will share $172,794 in grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration for improved fire operations, fire safety and vehicle purchases.

The Clinton Fire Department will receive $46,800 to support fire operations and firefighter safety initiatives. The Thorndike Volunteer Fire Department is expected to use its $81,000 grant to purchase a firefighting vehicle. The Sinclair Volunteer Fire Department will receive $44,994 to carry out fire operations and conduct firefighter safety programs.

The grants are made possible through the FIRE Grant Program, established by federal legislation sponsored by U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and by Rep. John Baldacci.

“The rural nature of our state means that many of Maine’s 494 fire departments have to cover vast areas, making it difficult for communities to share services or otherwise cooperate to achieve efficiencies. This funding will help fire departments in Clinton, Thorndike and Sinclair meet the increased demands to provide the services on which we all depend,” said Sens. Snowe and Collins in a joint statement announcing the grants.

“September 11th was a clear reminder for all of us that firefighters put their lives on the line each and every day,” said Rep. Baldacci in a separate statement. “It is essential that they have the best training and equipment. This new federal program helps to ensure that local fire departments receive added funding and support.”
