In Bangor’s defense

I take issue with the sentiments expressed by Donna George (BDN letter, July 13-14). It is unfair to say that Bangor does not appreciate our service men and women. As someone who served on active duty for 24 years, I can tell you that the people of Bangor, more than any other community, showed a great deal of appreciation during Operation Desert Storm. They greeted returning soldiers at the airport no matter what time of day and they did so in significant numbers.

When you compare this hero’s welcome to the bum’s rush Vietnam veterans received, it is evident the citizens of Bangor appreciated the efforts of our service men and women. Ms. George’s anger should be directed at the business people who are refusing to serve members of the armed forces who don’t happen to have a Maine ID. There is a chance the true problem lies in our laws.

If the Legislature requires a business to accept only a Maine driver’s license or state ID, then by law a military ID is not sufficient proof of age. This type of policy is not only disrespectful of our military but is also anti-tourist. I thank Bangor for its show of support for returning service men and women.
