Perry paces Calais to win Little League Softball state tourney opens in Bangor

BANGOR – Stephanie Perry struck out 10 batters Friday and pitched a four-hitter as Calais defeated Rockland 13-11 in the first round of the 11-12 Little League Softball State Tournament.

Stephanie Perry singled twice and Kayla Beaton had an RBI single for Calais, which is representing District 1.

Kristen Harjula singled twice and Dana Clark tripled for Rockland, the District 2 champion. Courtney Williams struck out four in the loss.

South Lewiston 7, Saco 6

At Bangor, Katie Cobb, Mariah Labbe and Danielle Willey stroked consecutive singles with one out in the bottom of the sixth, pushing across the winning run.

Danielle Willey pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight, for District 5 champ South Lewiston.

Losing pitcher Emma Vallancourt, who struck out 12, tripled to pace Saco, the District 4 winner. Jen McGrath and Danielle Dyer each doubled.

Coastal 13, Acadian 6

At Bar Harbor, Rob Haskell’s two-run home run sparked an eight-run third inning as Coastal secured the District 1 championship.

Haskell added two singles and finished the day with five RBIs. Josh Astbury pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters. Jeremy Dunham singled four times and drove in a run and Nick Saunders singled and doubled for Coastal. Astbury drove in two runs with a double.

Nick Hubbard led Acadian with two RBI singles and Dylan Burr singled and brought in a run with a walk.

Bucksport 11, Ellsworth 1

At Bucksport, Forrest Wardwell struck out 12 batters in six innings of relief as Bucksport advanced in the 13-14 all-star tournament.

Wardwell and Dick Osborne each singled twice while driving in a run. Matt Allison added an RBI single and Teddy Cook doubled.

Matt Peasley, Corey Smith, Mike Smith and Matt Rausch each singled in the loss. Smith scored Ellsworth’s run on an error. Loser Corey Smith struck out six.

Lincoln 7, Katahdin Valley 3

At Taylor Field in Bangor, hits by Ethan White and Tyler Tash provided Lincoln with its only earned runs as it won the Division 3 championship for 9-and 10-year-olds.

White drove a run with a triple in the first inning and later scored on a wild pitch as part of a three-run first inning. Tash drove in a run with a single and then scored on an error. Travis Langevin doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Evan McCarthy struck out 13 batters in the loss for Katahdin Valley. Bronson Merry and Dakota Sleeper each had RBI singles.

Lincoln won all three meetings between the two teams in the last two weeks. McCarthy struck out 25 in nine innings of work during the three games.

District 3 sportsmanship award

Players from the Holbrook District 3 ages 9-10 Little League all-stars were named the 2002 recipients of the Sportsmanship Award. Players were also given free passes to all 23 games at the Senior League World Series at Mansfield Stadium, Aug. 11-17.

Players on the team included: Tyler Bessette, Kyle Senter, Ray Bessette, Brandon Carney, Devon Cyr, Leah Jackson, Bennett Higgins, Cody Ware, Dustin Lawrence, Matt Sloan, Jason McBurnie, Joe Burke; coaches: Joe Lynch, Chip Ware; manager: Ray Bessette.

Correction: An account of a District 3 Little League baseball playoff game between Lincoln and Katahdin Valley in Saturday’s paper contained an incorrect statement. Lincoln won two of the three meetings between the two teams.
