A Brewer man faces charges of aggravated cultivation of marijuana after police seized 10 marijuana plants from the woods behind his home next to the Washington Street School, police said Sunday.

Police obtained a warrant to search 22-year-old Matt Spencer’s apartment and nearby property Friday after area residents reported that he was growing marijuana there, Cpl. Keith Emery said. Police found 10 plants behind his 7 Silk St. home, with six plants growing in the ground and four plants found in buckets.

The bust is the second in a month within the school zone, officials said. The last arrest was June 21 involving OxyContin. Spencer will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Sept. 6.

A Bangor man was charged after witnesses claimed to have seen him driving drunk and assaulting his girlfriend, officials said.

Neil Butler, 33, of Bangor faces charges of assault and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, Bangor police Officer Steve Jordan said. Police had responded to a complaint by an employee at a Broadway bar of a drunken driver when they received a call from a cabdriver that a man had jumped out of a black Bronco and had begun to assault a woman.

The cabdriver told police that the vehicle had cut him off as he was about to drop off the woman. He also told police that the man threw the woman to the ground and punched her repeatedly, Bangor police Sgt. Thomas Reagan said.

Police said they found Butler standing over the woman. He fell back against the vehicle when he saw the officers, Jordan said. Butler was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where an Intoxilizer test found his blood alcohol level to be 0.22 percent. The legal limit for adults in Maine is 0.08 percent.

Butler remained in Penobscot County Jail Sunday night and will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor today. His bail was set at $1,040 cash.

Brewer Officer John Knappe pulled over a speeding car Saturday afternoon and detected the smell of burned marijuana, according to Cpl. Keith Emery.

A search found Chad Norris, 28, of Newport in possession of a pink pill, later identified as the painkiller Darvocet; a bottle filled with marijuana seeds; and two marijuana pipes. One of the pipes contained a small amount of partially burned marijuana.

Norris was charged with possession of a Schedule W drug, possession of a usable amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A Texas truck driver hauling glue was arrested late last week after it was determined that he was intoxicated.

Nathan Hubbard, 62, pulled over at the Big Apple convenience store in Corinna late Thursday after his brakes caught on fire, said Penobscot County sheriff’s Deputy Josh Tibbetts. The truck was near the gasoline pumps, and the fire spread along the brake line before it was put out by a clerk using a fire extinguisher and by Corinna firefighters.

Firefighters on the scene thought Hubbard had been drinking and reported their suspicions to the Sheriff’s Department. Tibbetts said he found Hubbard was unsteady on his feet and he had the smell of alcohol on him.

Hubbard failed field sobriety tests and was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. His blood alcohol content registered 0.14 percent, above the Maine limit for adults of 0.08 percent.

An Ellsworth man was arrested Friday after Brewer police received a report that he was drinking in his car.

They found Johnny Crowder, 32, trying to start his car but apparently unable to do so, Cpl. Keith Emery said.

Crowder refused a field sobriety test and was found to be operating with a suspended license, Emery said. While in the police cruiser en route to Penobscot County Jail, Crowder slammed his head against the cage in the cruiser, knocking himself unconscious. He was revived by jail personnel with smelling salts, then refused an Intoxilizer test.

Crowder was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and with a suspended license. Crowder also refused to sign a summons for a warrant from Penobscot County for failure to appear in court. Police also found Crowder to be wanted on an unspecified warrant from Montana. He will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Sept. 13.
