Strong pitching helps Hampden win 2 games

BANGOR – Lacey Littlefield tossed a two-hitter, striking out 13 and walking two, as Hampden posted a 6-1 win over South Portland American in the Little League Softball state tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds on Sunday. Hampden also received a fine pitching effort from Michelle Wells in a Saturday victory and emerged from the weekend atop the winners bracket with a 2-0 record.

Eva Shannon singled twice for Hampden-Newburgh-Winterport while Amanda Palmer doubled in two runs and Ashley Gott doubled. Littlefield stroked a two-run single.

Heather Robert doubled and Julie DiMatteo singled and scored for South Portland American.

At Bangor, Michelle Wells tossed a three-hitter and aided her own cause by driving in four runs with a double and a single Hampden prevailed in five innings on Saturday.

Amanda Palmer drilled a double and a triple and drove in a run for Hampden while Katelin Tunney added a triple and a single. Wells struck out 11 and walked five.

Courtney Hill and Lindsay Mingo each singled and scored for Calais.

South Portland 14, S. Lewiston 1

At Bangor, Julie DiMatteo held South Lewiston to just one hit, striking out 12 and walking five, to pace South Portland American.

DiMatteo also paced the offense with a home run, a single and an RBI. Jamie Harmon added two singles and Heather Robert had a double for South Portland American.

Maria Labbe doubled for South Lewiston.

Saco 22, Rockland 6

At Bangor, Kayla Neilsen knocked in three runs with a home run and three singles for Saco on Saturday.

Emma Vaillancourt added two singles and an RBI for Saco while Shannon Provost held Rockland to just two hits in four innings, striking out eight.

Erika Felt singled twice and drove in a run for Rockland.

At Bangor, Kacy Boucher rapped two singles, including one that drove in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth, to give South Lewiston the win on Sunday.

Robyn Kennedy added a triple, a single and two RBIs for South Lewiston while Danielle Willey cracked a double and three singles and struck out 10 batters in a complete-game pitching effort.

Courtney Hill singled in a run for Calais. Kayla Beaton, Stephanie Perry and Kati Lutz each singled and scored. Perry struck out 10 while pitching all eight innings.

At Bangor, Katy MacDonald allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out six and walking one, to lead Bangor to the win in the District 3 championship game on Saturday.

Jessie Roberts rapped three singles and scored twice for Bangor while Taylor Lauritson added a triple, a single and three RBIs.

Jenna Shue singled twice for Hampden.

At Bucksport, Nick Osborne hit two singles to knock in three runs to help Bucksport win the District 1 Junior League championship game on Sunday.

Teddy Cooke, Chad Cottrell, and Joe Robicheau each hit two singles for Bucksport. Cory Cushing tripled with three RBIs and Forrest Wardwell doubled.

Colin Henry singled a knocked in two runs for Coastal of Blue Hill and Thomas Allen hit a single.

At Bucksport, Joe Robicheau hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Bucksport on Saturday. The win forced Sunday’s District 1 championship game.

Teddy Cook and Chad Cottrell each hit a pair of singles for Bucksport. Chris Maguire doubled with a RBI.

Tyson Guthrie and Bryant Ciomei singled for Coastal of Blue Hill and Shane Eaton hit a single with two RBIs.
