POLAND – A driver who was killed when his cement truck crashed into a pond was identified Thursday.

Merrill Kimball, 50, of Lewiston was behind the wheel when the 60,000-pound truck skidded toward a bridge, tore through a guardrail, flipped and sank in Middle Range Pond, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

A diver with the Sheriff’s Department who happened to be fishing nearby plunged into the water but was unable to free Kimball, who worked for Auburn Concrete, from the truck’s cab.

It was likely Kimball had already died by the time the diver reached him, police said. The investigation was being handled by the Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Division.
