BANGOR – A man armed with a handgun made off with an undisclosed amount of cash Thursday night after robbing the Stillwater Convenience and Deli near the Interstate 95 overpass.
At 11 p.m. the man entered the store, displayed a handgun to the cashier and demanded the money from the cash register, according to Sgt. Mark Hathaway of the Bangor Police Department. The man pulled his shirt over the bottom of his face and pulled his hood down over the top of his head to cover his face, Hathaway said. The whole incident happened very quickly, Hathaway said, and the man fled on foot.
There were no customers in the store at the time and the cashier was unharmed in the incident, Hathaway said.
The man was described as having a slender build, measuring around 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing a green-hooded sweat shirt and a white turtleneck, Hathaway said.
The incident is still under investigation. Hathaway said Bangor detectives have been in contact with Brewer police about a similar armed robbery that occurred early Tuesday morning at the Brewer Motor Inn on Wilson Street.
A man entered the motel lobby at 2:50 a.m., showed the clerk a handgun and forced the clerk to lie down on the floor. The man then took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register before leaving on foot. According to police, the man wore a red bandana and sunglasses.
Even with similarities of a handgun and the late hour in both incidents, Hathaway said there isn’t enough evidence to say the two incidents are connected.
Anyone passing by the Stillwater Convenience store around the time of the robbery is asked to call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.
